The crib is the first piece of nursery furniture usually purchased. It should be comfortable and easy for baby and parents too .
TYPES OF CRIB
>>Single Drop-Side
Single drop-side allows one side to be raised and lowered for getting baby in and out. Benefit: Crib is very stable because one side rail is permanently attached to both the headboard and the foot board.
>>Double Drop-Side
Double drop-side has two sides that raise and lower. Benefit: Lets you get baby in and out from either side, without having to walk around. Kickbar Drop-Side Release enables you to simply lift the drop-side a little with one hand, then push your foot against the kickbar to release the drop-side. Benefit: Strong metal drop-side release ensures that the side rail does not drop accidentally. Also, it's durable enough to last through several children.
>>Kick bar Drop-Side Release
Kick bar drop-side release enables you to simply lift the drop-side a little with one hand, and then push your foot against the kickbar to release the drop-side. Benefit: Strong metal drop-side release ensures that the side rail does not drop accidentally. Also, it's durable enough to last through several children.
>>Shin Drop-Side Release
Shin Drop-Side Release lets you lift the drop-side a little with one hand, then push it inward with your shin to release it. Benefit: You keep your balance at all times as you use your shin and not your foot to release the drop-side. This is especially convenient while holding the baby.
>>4-Position Mattress Spring
4-Position Mattress Spring permits the mattress spring to be lowered to 4 different positions. Benefit: The mattress adjusts position as baby grows.
Convertible Cribs
People often look for more value for their money, and convertible cribs offer just that to all new parents. Extremely versatile, these cribs grow along with your child, usually converting from infant cribs, to 3-sided day beds to full-size too!
Cribs are a crucial part of the nursery, and serve as anchors for the room. Cradles and bassinets allow parents to move sleeping babies with more relative ease than a crib, allowing greater flexibility in completing household tasks with Baby securely nearby.
Cradles are lovely because they provide a gentle rocking motion that soothes tiny newborns. In fact, today's cradles often feature automated rocking motions. Bassinets, as well as lighter, more portable Moses Baskets, can be used while traveling or as an alternative baby rest station in multi-level homes.
Difference between Cradle, Bassinet and Moses Basket
Parents are more at ease when their sleeping infants are where they can see and hear them. Using a cradle, bassinet, or Moses Basket during Baby's first few months at home is an easy way to keep your sleeping little one nearby and safe. Age > 0-4 months.
Cradles are small beds characterized by a rocking base that help soothe new babies to sleep. They are slightly more substantial, thus not as portable. Traditionally cradles sat low to the ground, but modern cradles are often crib height. There are designs to fit any taste, from the simplest "green" wooden frame and unbleached cotton to extravagant models that feature carved wood, picturesque paint jobs, curlicue wrought iron, frilly bedding, or canopies.
Bassinets are small, sturdy portable beds often used while traveling. Most have a partial (often retractable or reversible) hood to help baby feel secure. When used in the home, bassinets are often placed upon a special base designed to lift them to an easy height for adults to attend to the baby without back strain. Many feature casters and storage underneath. There are myriad designs available from the traditional wicker to modern opulent fabric-swathed pastel confections.A Moses Basket is usually a lighter, more portable version of a bassinet, often woven, with handles designed for easy carrying. Again, they come as plain or fancy as you desire.
Cradles, bassinets, and Moses Baskets are a great supplement to a regular crib. Babies sleep almost continually for the first several months of life, so although these beds are temporary, they're a good investment for a peaceful household - and peace of mind.

I had a Graco crib, don't remember the model. Got it from Walmart.
Liked it coz it had the lowering rail, makes it easy to put the child in. If the railings are high its not easy to put a sleeping child without disturbing his sleep. And trust me, u want to give your back as much rest as possible, coz the diaper changing and feeding and everything is going to require bending. More than hurting your back, it'll be hard to put your sleeping baby without waking him up.

Bassinet is a good investment. Has wheels and is portable. Easy to move around the house. It serves well in order to keep the baby close-by to you during first few months. It is very cozy and comfortable. The rocking feature is great.
>>Megha - I'm planning to buy this wooden cradle...its just like we get in India and i have seen one of my friends use it..

>>Pushpanjali - As seen on "Doctors"--they advice for mattress in which the air flows through. You can ask the store person...From top of the mattress to bottom and vice-versa there is continuous air flow. This is good n safe as even in sleep if baby turns & sleeps on her tummy.

Graco Pack 'n Play ($70 @ gracobaby.com) which comes with a bassinet and toy bar.
>> Divya Chaudhry : I prefer to have both of them - Play yard and Crib.
This item works great for the first 4 to 6 months....Great for baby, sleep right next to you in bed... Great for night time feedings... u dont have to get out of bed. and super way for bonding with your newborn too.
http://www.amazon.com/Arms-Reach-Nat ural-Original-Co-Sleeper/dp/B0001D12XA/r ef=sr_1_1?s=gateway&ie=UTF8&qid=12851731 82&sr=8-1
The sides are quite high and baby cannot just roll out... close the open end at 3-4months. As for later than 6months, or once baby can hold and stand up wen there is possibility of the lil' darling to tumble over... Then use the above item as a day time nap station (play-yard type) and get a Crib for night time sleep.
If you are in a Apt: just leave ur baby in the next room to sleep, its fine.
If you are in a two level home or town-house... you can use somthing like this http://www.amazon.com/First-Years-Secure -Sleeper-Colors/dp/B00012CHFI/ref=sr_1_5 ?ie=UTF8&s=baby-products&qid=1285173531& sr=1-5
Some parents like to use the 2nd item until 2-3months (until baby rolls over) in their own bed and the 1st item for day time.

- I bought the Cosco portable crib from babiesrus. It comes along with a mattress.
- It is not as large as a standard size crib and not as small as a bassinet. The best part about this crib - has wheels and can move it to any room.
- When the baby starts sitting, u can lower the mattress level for safety. My daughter is about to turn 1 year old and I still use the crib. Though now I am planning to buy a toddler bed but the crib is still very helpful when I want her to stay in one place( now that she crawls and is learning to stand up independently). Generally, the max load for the bassinets attached with these playpens is less than 15 lbs .
- Check this out:http://www.kaboodle.com/reviews/eddie-bauer-complete-care-play-yard
- In the product description, they have mentioned "Recommended bassinet weight: Up to 15 lbs"

- No need for convertible cribs. We don't use it anyway.
- Now my DD sleeps in a big comfortable Ikea futon, as the Crib is too small for her.

- 1 fitted sheet bumper guard comforter crib skirt.
- Usually 150 coils or higher in crib mattresses is considered to be good. It is always good to buy a firm mattress rather than a soft one.
- Sealy, Simmons kids and Serta are good brands for crib mattress.
- If the baby turns over, then it is easy for him to get up from a firm mattress. A soft mattress in that case poses suffocation risk.
- Also buy a quilted mattress pad to keep it clean. Baby Connection's mattress pad is very good & absorbent.
- An expensive mattress doesn't mean a good one. You can easily get a good quality mattress b/w $60-$100. Same can be used in toddler bed later on.

Graco Pack 'n Play ($70 @ gracobaby.com) which comes with a bassinet and toy bar.
>> Divya Chaudhry : I prefer to have both of them - Play yard and Crib.
- Play yard is more flexible, it can fold so you can keep the baby in whichever room you like.
- You can take it to your friends place.
- It will also be useful if you plan to visit India.
- You can use it up to 1 yr or so. Depends on baby's weight and height.
- You can change to toddlers bed...so it will last longer.
- I have Graco's play yard and Simplicity's crib.

Hi
ReplyDeleteI have 2 questions
1 Can't we let babies co-sleep, that is sleep in the same bed with Mom n Dad ?
2 What is your opinion about letting it sleep in the pack and play ?
-Thank you
Mommytobe

ReplyDeleteYou can surely let you baby co-sleep with you and Dad, a King bed would be great... its not possible if u have a Queen bed...
Also, having a crib is better, coz with co-sleeping the fear of maybe you will roll onto the baby is always there...also, once the baby learns to roll over... u will have to move the baby into some other sleeping arrnagement.
Pack and play - u can use teh lil' bassinet portion in the initial weeks... there again, once baby learns to roll over... u need alternate sleeping arrangements.
You have very good info in ur blog, but the font and colors u have chosen is really hard to read. I hope u can change it.
ReplyDeleteI haven't update the blog in a while... just got carried away with other daily routine with my toddler... Will look into making some change during this week.... Thanks for letting me know :)
